« Between doki-poterie » is an editorial project. This book will describe my encouters with young japanese ceramists, showing the way they work the earth, their professionnal background, their point of view about ceramics or art in general. From March to September 2011, I set off to explore workshops, manufacturing processes and artistic approaches. During several weeks, I will observe how the ceramists work. Each workshop will be the subject of a photographic report by Hélène Dodet. The point is to compare french and japanese culture on similar projects : creating clay objects and making a living out of it. As a conscequence of these meetings, the different medias necessary for the making of the book « Between doki-poterie » will be put together. In September 2011, when I’ll return, we’ll be able to begin the editing work .
There will be as many chapters as workshops being presented. After each experience (from one to four weeks long), we will share our impressions during an interview where I’ll ask a serie of questions that have rised from the exchange. The communication during this discussion, or during the working experience, will be in english, japanese and french. That’s why this texte, « between doki-poterie », will use these three languages alongside. A short texte will end each chapter, telling the circumstances that brought me to each workshop. A preface will be writen in order to present the japanese art of ceramics. Different appendix will be available : a map of Japan locating the potters’ workshops and the main towns and kilns, a glossary about ceramics vocabulary in three langages and images of the works I’ve realised in each workshop as a trainee. The book will be illustrated by Hélène Dodet’s photographs, and a few of my own drawings.
